MY BIGGEST MISTAKE AS A LEADER
"

On the left is me in 2018, preparing to make one of the biggest mistakes a leader can make.

Wanting to be “Liked” vs truly making an impact (And being respected)

I had just taken over a new team full of tenured employees. We needed to make changes, and it was obvious. The problem was our tenured crew didn’t

For us to continue to grow and scale the company, we needed to stop operating in silos and start working together as a team, which means our roles needed to change. I knew deep down I needed to have some tough conversations and that some of my team would not like it.

As I thought about having some of these conversations, I couldn’t help but think:

“What if they don’t like me after we make these changes?”

“What if they leave?”

Well, guess what… I DIDN’T have those conversations, and I didn’t do what would’ve been best for the team, and they STILL left.

Then, in March 2020, our business came to a screeching halt. No one was hiring, so our clients put our searches on hold. Our business started to take a hit.  We lost some of our tenured people, and it was time for our company to either die or take off.

I realized that before we could turn things around as a company, I needed to change first.

If we were to build a great culture, it had to start with me, the leader.

So we got to work…

✅ We defined what culture means and how to measure it (Clearly)

✅ We started scheduling more 1:1s with team members

✅ We implemented stay interviews (Not just exit interviews)

It didn’t happen overnight, but we began building something we were proud of

A place where culture and connection are at the forefront of everything we do, ‌where people can speak freely, and we know that we all have each other’s best interests in mind

Our company more than doubled in size in the next two years as a result of it.

In the process, I found a new passion of mine: Helping leaders transform into culture architects.

So that’s me on the right…perfect? Nope!

Have I got it all figured out? Definitely not! But I’m improving and feeling great about where we’re going. Yep! 😁

If you’re a leader and you feel like your leadership skills aren’t where you want them to be, or maybe your team isn’t where you’d like it to be, send me a DM, and let’s get squared away for a strong 2024!

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A WORK-LIFE BALANCE

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A WORK-LIFE BALANCE

We are at the end of 2023 and well past the start of one of the biggest market trends of this decade: life-work integration (Yes, I meant to put life before work because we need to prioritize ourselves!).  2023 has brought us to the pinnacle of a transformative...
